Make the planet green and beautiful

Kitchen Gardening:
Kitchen gardening is the best means of recreation and exercise. In fact there can  be no better occupation in which the whole family can actually  participate, work together and derive pleasure and profit. Kitchen gardening lowers down the vegetable bill. Vegetables grown in the kitchen gardens are fresh and are not liable to infection with germs occurring in unsanitary markets.

It is the year round agent for a ready supply of fresh vegetables which are essential for good health.
Guidelines for management of a kitchen garden.
Location : Kitchen Garden should be located on the eastern or southern side of the house to have maximum sunlight and protection to the plants.

Never attempt a kitchen garden in the shady areas of homes, as this is not suitable for plants growth. It should be nearer to the water source for irrigation.
Sight selected for kitchen garden should be slightly raised than the rest of the area to improve the drainage of excess water.
Soil should be well ploughed and what ever be the nature of soil, it can be changed by adding sand, organic matter, well rotten farmyard manure (FYM) etc.
Layout of kitchen garden :
It is always to have a small but well kept garden than a large one poorly cared for. Permanent or long season crops or those occupying the land throughout the growing season should be placed at one side to avoid interference with tillage. Early maturing varieties should be planted to gather in contiguous rows, so that the area may be available at once for late crops.
MANURING :

Farmyard manure (FYM) or compost is best suited, but it should be thoroughly rotten and of fine condition and well incorporated in the soil. Apply about 1.25 quintal of (FYM) for per nine square meter area. Vermicompost Can be also used which is superior in performance than (FYM), but it should be from a reliable source or can be prepared at home from domestic waste.
PLANTING:

Always obtain seeds from a reliable source or from your stare Agriculture department.
Seeds should be planted deeper in light soils and shallower in heavy soils.
Seeds or seedlings must be covered carefully with moist soil after sowing or planning, otherwise they will go dry.

Vine crops should be planted near the fence or hedge of the garden for easy trailing. In planting, preference should be given to those vegetables which give the largest amount of edible material in proportion to the space occupied.
To ensure a steady supply of vegetables, several sowings or a succession of sowings of crops like bhindi, pea, radish, tomato, carrot and cabbage etc. Should be done at short intervals.
Plant seeds of vegetables like carrot, radish, peas, beans, spinach and other leafy vegetables and also cucurbits direct in the plot.
For vegetables like tomato, brinjal, chilli, turnip, Cole crops, first raise the seedlings and then transplant them.

KITCHEN GARDEN IN A BEAUTIFUL WAY
AFTER CARE: To keep down the growth of weeds, to conserve the moisture and to break the soil after rain or irrigation, plots should be given frequent shallow cultivation.
Keep a ready stock of few insecticides and fungicides along with one duster and sprayer. But these should be used strictly according to the advice of the nearest plant protection officer or according to the directions given in the literature usually furnished by the commercial firms.
As most of the chemicals may leave some residual toxic effect therefore, they should normally be sprayed at a younger stage of the crop at least two to three weeks before harvest.
